Cranberry Orange Drink Syrup

Cranberry Orange Drink Syrup | Stephanie HansenThis cranberry orange drink syrup is one of the holiday gifts I give my family. My sister is not so great at mixology, so giving her a drink syrup makes short work of a tasty mimosa, vodka cranberry, or mocktail when mixed with soda water or tonic. I also like this syrup with equal parts fresh lime juice and tequila for a Winter Margarita or muddled with mint and rum for a seasonal Mojito. Really the possibilities are endless.

When making drink syrups, use your palate as a guide. Too sweet? Add less sugar.Too tart? Add more sugar. Not a fan of orange juice? Try limeade. Really you can play with this recipe and make it your own.

When using drink syrups my rule of thumb is to pour equal amounts of syrup to spirit. Then add mixers like juices, tonics, soda waters or sparkling wine like Cava depending on the cocktail you are making. Have fun!

Cranberry Orange Drink Syrup Recipe

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 bags fresh cranberries (approximately 6 cups)
  • 2 c of sugar
  • 1 c of water
  • Orange peel (peel a section with a vegetable peeler)
  • 1 c of orange juice
  • (optional) 6 dashes orange bitters, or you can sub orange or lemon essential oils if you have those instead.
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice or squeeze half a lemon.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Place sugar, cranberries, water, and orange peel in a saucepot.
  2. Cook down until tender, about five minutes.
  3. Bring to a boil and stir and wait for the cranberries to pop open.
  4. Remove from heat.
  5. Add orange juice, bitters, lemon juice, and stir.
  6. Strain mixture through a wire strainer pressing down on the solids until only juice remains. Some people strain it twice to get every piece of fruit out of the syrup, but I don’t mind a bit of pulp. It makes it rustic. (I save the pulp for Cranberry Orange bread or muffins – recipe here)
  7. Cool and pour into the container. You can use fancy bottles or rustic mason jars.
