Family Feasts for Take out in the Twin Cities

How do you please everyone with some family take out? Try one of my favorite local spots for your next meal.

Toma Mojo Grill
– Ridgedale

“Inspired by the flavors of Spain and Portugal this spot near Ridgedale is great for fast-casual family take-out.  When these folks got together they wanted to make great food but simple food that would be easy for families to pick up but flavorful and versatile. Whether you are going for a rice bowl or chicken or pork platter the portions are generous, the sides are delicious (make sure you try their number one seller their awesome brussels sprouts with citrus herb dressing) and the sauces are amazing. Herb aioli, red, mango, or citrus mojo or their Cuban citrus Piri Piri sauce that’s vinegary and bright. You can order bowls, plates, or their number one selling family platter with a whole seasoned Mojo roast chicken with two sauces and two sides for $36 that will feed a family of 4. 3-6 they have Happy Hour or “Errand Beer” hour that’s 2-4-1 on beer, wine, house-made sangria and snacks and comes in handy while waiting for your take out

Roti Mediterranean Grill – St Louis Park, U of M and IDS

This spot is walk-in or take-out. They are based out of Chicago and their offerings are made to order and super fresh and healthy. I love their Salmon kabob bowl with kale and roasted marinated tomatoes with crispy chickpeas and but their family feast for 4-6 is a great deal at $53 and you get a main like chicken roti or falafel or a salmon kabob and you get two sides like pickled vegetables or hummus with rice, pita, toppings, sauces and cookies and baklava.

Shish Mediterranean Café – Grand Avenue, St Paul, Mn.

Shish on Grand Avenue in St Paul has my favorite vegan Falafel, Veggie Curry or Gyro family feast. Each feast serves 3-4 generously and is between $40-$50 and comes with the main dish, saffron rice, hummus, green salad, and plenty of pitas made by Leo Judeh from his family recipe. Shish works with a local ranch, buying meats fresh. None of the meats used in Shish’s burgers or kabobs are ever frozen and you can tell. The care on this family meal is lovely.

Urban Growler St Paul

The folks at Urban Growler make delicious bar food and they have an awesome fish fry and yes… they have Perch. Their family-style take-out grown-up macaroni and cheese or barbeque pork feeds 4-6 but I am partial to their buttermilk fried chicken, coleslaw, and pickles and you can choose between tots or fries. The best part of Family Feasts at Urban Growler is the Crowlers or Growlers you can pick up with your order. They make excellent beer.

Namaste in Uptown

If your kids are adventurous and love it a little spicy try Namaste in Uptown. Their family meal feeds 4-6 and offers a ton of food. You choose from 4 curries and sides with basmati rice and you can choose your spice level. The curries will last days in the refrigerator so my trick is always to order the larger portion, so you have leftovers for later. Treat yourself to a Chai Tea Latte with Ginger cardamom while you wait. Masala chicken, fish, spicy goat, coconut spinach, or lamb curry can all be yours, and it’s good. It’s a huge deal for a $48 feast.
