Mountain Dew Apple Dumplings

Apple Dumpling with ice cream on a plate

The most requested recipe on our radio show, Weekly Dish, is one that isn’t really a recipe at all. The delightful combination of Mountain Dew, apple, and dumplings has gained popularity as this recipe’s name. This recipe is assembly. It is also amazingly delicious though the ingredients will have you scratching your head. Disgusting amounts of butter (a Paula Deen-obscene amount of butter), crescent rolls, sugar and ….. wait for it…. Mountain Dew.

You wrap chunks of Granny Smith tart apples in Pillsbury Cresent Dough and pour a sugary, buttery slury over the top and bake them. From there its magic!

Why Granny Smith apples?

When it comes to baking, you’ll want apples that hold their shape and offer a good balance of sweet and tart flavors. Some of the best apples for baking include:

  1. Granny Smith: See I told you these are the ones! vKnown for their tartness and firm texture, Granny Smith apples hold up well in pies and tarts.
  2. Honeycrisp: Hello Minnesota, These apples are sweet and crisp and made here, making them great for adding texture to baked goods like muffins and crisps.
  3. Jonagold: A cross between Jonathan and Golden Delicious, Jonagold apples have a sweet-tart flavor and hold their shape when baked.
  4. Braeburn: With a spicy-sweet flavor and firm texture, Braeburn apples work well in pies, cobblers and turnovers.
  5. Fuji: Sweet and juicy, Fuji apples add sweetness to baked dishes like apple buckles, crumbles, brown bettys and cakes.

Yes, Mountain Dew is what makes these babies rise and become the yummiest Apple Dumpling around. And remember, the unique addition of Mountain Dew transforms ordinary dumplings into an extraordinary treat. This recipe can easily be doubled or even tripled for a crowd! You can thank/hate me later.
