I love cooking the Thanksgiving meal each year. I like pouring through the cooking magazines and strategizing a new side or two to have with my traditional sage stuffing and turkey gravy. I realize however that for some the idea of cooking a meal for 8-10 is agonizing so for you – I offer up my list of Thanksgiving Lifesavers. These folks will prepare you enough delicious food to have you flat on your back in front of the TV by game time with minimal effort.

Birchwood Cafe is located in Minneapolis, and they are known for their thoughtfully sourced ingredients including organic when possible. Birchwood’s wholesome take on Thanksgiving is a step above the usual fare with a ready to eat meal like brandy braised pulled turkey breast or rosemary lime turkey legs and thighs. Sides are cranberry pear chutney, cornbread stuffing, maple squash mash, gravy, and buns. You can order the whole meal with multiple sides (8-12, $160 or 16-22 for $320) or if you want to cook your own turkey and just order the sides and the pies they can hook you up. Birchwood is an excellent resource for Gluten Free Pies like Pumpkin and Caramel apple streusel as well as Key Lime Cranberry and French Silk.

Kowalski’s Market has a great value meal with organic locally raised Ferndale Farms Turkey Dinners. All the meals are cold designed to be heat and eat by you. You can order the Small Turkey Dinner (serves 4-6 for $110) or the larger version (serves 10-12 for $160). The dinners come with gluten-free mashed potatoes, turkey gravy, green beans, sage and onion casseroles, maple roasted sweet potatoes, cranberry orange relish, dinner rolls, and pumpkin pie. You can also just order the sides if you like the idea of cooking your own bird or vice versa if you wish to pick up the turkey.

Surdyks Liquor in North East Minneapolis is known for their wine selection, but they also have fantastic catering options for the Holidays. You can order the full heat and eat meal or sides only. They even have bread cubes ready for stuffing, turkey stock as a gravy starter or just the gravy itself for those of us that are gravy challenged. Their stand alone pie menu at $20 for pumpkin, apple or bourbon pecan is a steal. Your dinner menu includes locally sourced organic Thyme and Preserved lemon Butter turkey with sides of Cheesy Potato Gratin, Cheddar Cauliflower Mash, gluten-free turkey gravy, Haricot Verts with Crispy Shallots and Toasted Almonds, Brussels Sprouts with Cider Vinegar and Crispy Pancetta, Maple-Pecan Roasted Butternut Squash
Sweet Potatoes with Honey Butter and Thyme (serves 8-10 for $182). On Wednesday when you pick up your meal don’t forget to get the Thanksgiving 4-pack of wine with a sparkling Rose, White, Chenin Blanc a Pinot and a Zinfandel for $39.99.

Keys Café has 9 locations throughout the Twin Cities and is known for serving gigantic portions of turkey and gravy every day with their tasty, creamy, turkey gravy sandwiches. That same deliciousness extends to their traditional Thanksgiving meal that is wholesome and perfect for traditionalists. Dinner includes turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, sage stuffing, sweet potatoes, corn, cranberries a loaf of homemade bread and a pumpkin pie. All the Baked Goodness is what Thanksgiving means for me. After all, this is the one time of year I eat my favorite, pumpkin pie and a leftover turkey sandwich is 100 times better if it is slathered with mayonnaise on a fluffy potato roll.
Heathers Pies are made from scratch in her S Minneapolis kitchen using the freshest organic ingredients whenever possible. This year’s options are Apple, Triple berry, Pumpkin or a peach apple crumble. Heathers Pies really stand out because they taste great and are beautifully prepared with cutouts making these pies a special treat on the table visually. All pies are $32, and if you miss Thanksgiving consider sending a Pie gram after the holiday is over. Heather makes the pie, personalizes it with a message and can deliver it locally.

The Salty Tart is Michelle Gayer. She owns bakeries in both St Paul and Minneapolis. Michelle is a James Beard Award finalist, and her pies and breads are wonderful. Squash Focaccia, Pumpkin Seed Bread or Sweet Potato Rolls are breads available for order. This year they will be featuring pie favorites such as Pumpkin, Pumpkin Chiffon, Apple or Chocolate Creampie for $27. They will have a pie pop-up at both bakeries on 11.19 where you can pick a pie and take it home that day, or you can order online for pick up Wednesday at 11.21.
